on Mary Oliver, regrets, and guarantees

on Mary Oliver and no guarentees

I have placed the words “fear or faith” over my year. Then I have worked all year on choosing faith. Time and again choosing faith. Situation after situation choosing faith.

But there are no guarantees, you know. That the faith that you have chosen won’t lead to failure. There are no guarantees that you won’t fall flat on your face.

You hope you won’t. But it’s not set in stone that choosing faith leads to success.

Sometimes it leads to a failure. And sometimes that failure is spectacular. Sometimes that failure is gut wrenching, and challenging, and takes everything out of you.

Sometimes choosing the safe path, the afraid path is much more appealing.

Yet, I keep coming back to this line from a Mary Oliver poem,

Listen, are you breathing just a little, and calling it a life? *

It is a valid question. In the end is choosing the safe path really living? Or is it merely existing and calling it living?

Sometimes the journey is more important than the destination. Sometimes walking through the fire is actually the point. Because it is there that you get forged and moulded into something new, something amazing.

Sometimes the only guarantee in choosing faith, is that the journey is worth it.

Hard but worth it.

Choosing faith, with no regrets.

Join me for the journey,

Jodie
