In the depths

in the depths poem by Jodie McCarthy

I notice it already,
the shortness
of breath
the tightness
in my chest

I don’t want to venture
below
the surface

the shallows
are safe
and known

the deep
is murky
and unclear

yet
something
draws
me
under

a faint glimmer
in the gloomy dark
a hint that
perhaps
there
is treasure
to be found

so, I breathe
deep
and dive
